Xamarin – Android Device Manager does not open

Installed Windows 10 from scratch, installed Visual Studio Pro 2017 with Xamarin Tools.

Clicking on either the “open Android Device Manager” or “open Android SDK Manager” icons

prompts for admin privileged but after clicking “yes” nothing happens, both Xamarin Android Device Manager and the Android SDK Manager wont start.

Re-installing does not change anything on this behaviour.

This is caused by – sorry to say so M$FT – a faulty Xamarin Setup!

Bugfix for faulty Xamarin Setup

When observing the error in the logfile located at

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\XamarinDeviceManager

we get those error:

System.Xml.XmlException: '.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 1.

Unfortunately the source of this error originates not in the config file mentioned in the log file but in this (global) Xamarin config file

%APPDATA%\Config\AndroidSDKManager\properties.xml

When we open that file in some editor we see a lot of 0x00 (NULL) values although it should be a XML file = plain text file.

Replace all the 0x00 with this line of text

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><SDKManagerProperties><Property key="ManifestType" value="Xamarin" /></SDKManagerProperties>

and save properties.xml – now you should be fine.

Thank you very very much M$FT for once again stealing our time!
